Free dog training classes return to Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Being a dog owner can be an extremely rewarding experience but it can also be a challenging one. That’s why one small business has teamed up with the city of Grand Rapids to help.

A Pleasant Dog, a dog training facility in Grand Rapids, will be offering classes to residents in the city at no charge to them.

“We’ve always wanted to extend our reach to perhaps the part of our neighbors and our population that maybe aren’t in the habit of hiring a dog trainer or maybe can’t afford to hire a dog trainer,” Jenn Gavin, the owner and head trainer at A Pleasant Dog, said.

It was that desire to reach the underserved community of dog owners in Grand Rapids that led A Pleasant Dog to reach out to city officials to set up these classes. They held similar courses earlier this year as well.

Some of the training dogs and owners alike will receive include walking on a leash in crowds, how to handle first-time meetings with pets and other humans and how to motivate your pet positively. There will also be training for dogs to learn agility skills and how to handle certain behaviors.
