Deputies: Kentwood man drowns at Versluis Park

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man drowned Saturday at Versluis Park in Plainfield Township, authorities say.

Around 6:15 p.m., crews were called to Versluis Lake for a swimmer who had gone under, according to Plainfield Fire Chief Kyle Svoboda.

“Preliminary information revealed the man went into the water, beyond the swim area, and did not resurface,” the Kent County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a release.

Svoboda said many bystanders, including swimmers and boaters, were looking for the man. He said after about half an hour, the man was pulled from the water. According to the sheriff’s office, the county dive team was on its way, but it was a Good Samaritan who recovered the man.

“Moby’s Dive Shop, which is just off of Northland Drive here, they had a couple rescue divers that were also in the water assisting in the efforts,” Svoboda said. “They, in fact, were the ones that found the victim, and we helped bring the victim out.”

First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the swimmer died, according to the fire chief.
