SHE RUNS Grand Rapids race in new location this year

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — There was more than a thousand women runners in the west side of Grand Rapids Sunday for an annual race.

SHE RUNS Grand Rapids is a women’s only race that is the celebration of empowerment and the strength of sisterhood. It also celebrate Title IX which is a federal law that protects people who report sex discrimination.

This year the race was at a new location at the John Ball Park across from the zoo. It used to be held at Calder Plaza.

Organizers said the race was a way to bring women together, connect everyone and have a fun time.

“Sometimes with the sport of running, it’s a very singular feat that’s out there and this is a space where you just watch people coming together of all different types of backgrounds and just celebrating the heck out of each other and it’s just so fun to see,” Sammy Bennett, an ambassador of She Runs, said. “We’re all rooting each other out here.”

Registration for the event started at 7 a.m. with the half marathon for myTEAM TRIUMPH starting at 7:55 a.m. They were followed by the half marathon at 8 a.m., the 10k at 8:15 a.m. and the 5k at 8:25 a.m.
