Supermercado Mexico planning to open fourth store

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A West Michigan family-owned grocery store is working to expand its chain as a way to give families a way to pass on their traditions through food.

Supermercado Mexico was first started in 2006 with the opening of its first location on Clyde Park Avenue in Grand Rapids. Then two years later, the owners bought the second shop on Chicago Drive in Wyoming and then the third store on Division Avenue in Wyoming.

They are now looking forward to their fourth location, which will be on Cesar E. Chavez Avenue SW in Grand Rapids. The inside will look similar to the Division location.

“We are very close hopefully to being able to actually break ground on the project and get something like that open,” Benjamin Cochran, the president and CEO of Supermercado Mexico, said.

Jose Luis Martinez shops frequently at the Division Avenue store. He works at Wicks Park Bar and Grille in Saugatuck and said Supermercado Mexico is where he finds products he can’t find elsewhere, like high-quality meat and chilis for his famous margaritas.
