There’s something bittersweet about walking past the Forever 21 in Woodland Mall, knowing that soon it will be gone for good.
For years, it’s been my go to spot when I needed a last minute outfit for a concert at the intersection, a trendy piece to refresh my outfit without the hefty price tag, or just a little retail therapy that wouldn’t zero me out. Now, with the news that Forever 21 is likely closing all 9 of its Michigan locations, including the one here in Grand Rapids, and it feels like the end of an era.

The parent company that owns Forever21 announced that they plan to “wind down” sales in all stores, and I noticed that the store in the Woodland Mall has had signs up for at least a week, saying everything has to go.
Sure, fast fashion has its critics and problems, but for so many of us who live on a budget and can’t afford big-name fashion every season, this store was our lifeline.
Forever 21 always delivered, and let’s be honest: who hasn’t killed time browsing their racks while waiting for a friend at the mall? The Woodland Mall just won’t feel quite the same without it.

It’s hard to see another store in the mall disappear, especially one that had a huge affordable selection. While online shopping is convenient, there’s something about trying things on, being able to browse tons of pieces quickly, and walking out with a bag in hand that just can’t be replaced…
