In 2025, Grand Rapids has already faced a series of heartbreaking restaurant closures. Beloved establishments like Rockwell Republic, Beacon Corner Bar, GR Noir Wine & Jazz, and more have closed their doors in recent months saying they fell victim to economic challenges and changing consumer habits.

It’s incredible to witness restaurateurs who choose to honor their commitment to feed our community. The latest is Steve Martinez, the owner and creator of Basalt. He recently admitted in a powerful video that rather than give up on his dream, he has chosen to adapt and evolve into a new concept.

In a recent Instagram post, Steve shared his vision for Basalt’s future. While he announced plans to close his restaurant Basalt. But don’t worry, he’s not going to get out of the game.

Instead, he plans to pivot his branding, expand the restaurant’s hours, and introduce menu items at more accessible price points. This strategic pivot aims to better serve the community by accommodating a wider range of schedules and budgets, ensuring more people can enjoy the unique culinary experience only Basalt offers.

Basalt as it currently stands, will close their doors on April 13th and discontinue service as a Brick and Mortar, and in its place will be the newly redesigned Asada on Wealthy…
