‘Too late’: Grand Rapids teen died even as fentanyl fatalities dropped

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — On a December day in 2004, Kevin and Stephanie Kammeraad stood on a hotel balcony, straining to catch a first glimpse of their son.

“I think that’s them,” Kevin Kammeraad said excitedly as a black SUV pulled up to their hotel in Guatemala City, Guatemala. “Oh, there he is!”

A woman had emerged from the SUV, the Kammeraads’ son in her arms. Baby Carlos Alberto was 4 months old.

The Kammeraads were about to become parents. Kevin was determined to document every precious moment.

“We just someday want you to see this,” Kevin said, peering earnestly into the video camera. “Carlito Alberto, someday you’ll be able to watch this footage.”…
