Former Grand Rapids officer’s state of mind, not Patrick Lyoya’s, focus of murder trial

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Former Grand Rapids police Officer Christopher Schurr’s state of mind will be at issue in his upcoming murder trial – not what Patrick Lyoya was thinking before their deadly confrontation, a judge said.

Schurr shot Lyoya in the back of his head after a traffic stop and fight.

The defense says Lyoya fought the officer because he was intoxicated, there was evidence of identity theft in his car and he had an outstanding warrant for domestic violence…
