Outages in Grand Rapids prompt school closures; power restored

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Power has been restored to thousands of people in Grand Rapids Thursday morning.

The Consumers Energy interactive power map previously showed a cluster of outages in the city, first reported around 5:50 a.m. and impacting about 6,000 customers in total. The largest, affecting more than 3,000 customers, was in the area of Lake Drive SE and Eastern Avenue SE.

The loss of power prompted multiple Grand Rapids schools to close Thursday: Congress Elementary, Grand Rapids Montessori Academy, Innovation Central High School and Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Academy. All other schools remain open.
