Developer to raze former Eastown funeral home, osteopathic hospital for 30-unit housing project

Grand Rapids-based Fulton Group LLC plans to demolish vacant buildings in the city’s Eastown neighborhood that the firm has owned since 2020 to construct a 30-unit apartment development.

The structures at 1225 and 1227 Lake Drive SE housed many uses over the years, including offices and a boarding house for the nonprofit Thresholds Inc., a funeral home, the residence of the Catholic bishop of Grand Rapids, and Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital.

“The location is why we initially bought the buildings five years ago,” said Josh Smith, Fulton Group partner and co-founder. “The Eastown community is just such a tight-knit, fantastic diverse community, and we wanted to build something there that really looks like it could stand the test of time for the next 100 years.”…
