Homelessness is most prevalent among K-12 students in these Grand Rapids-area districts

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Two Kent County districts – Grand Rapids Public Schools and Kentwood Public Schools were among 10 Michigan districts with the greatest number of reported homeless students in 2023-24.

That’s out of 780 public school districts, alternative education programs and charter schools that reported the number of students they identified as homeless during the school year.

Public schools are required by federal law to identify and assist these students under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, which ensures homeless youth have access to free public education and other resources, like transportation. Reports are submitted to the U.S. Department of Education…
