Court docs: Gun found in toilet tank after deadly motel shooting

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The deadly shooting at a Grand Rapids motel Saturday was captured on video and the gun was later found hidden in the suspect’s ex-girlfriend’s room, court records show.

Devin Hayle, 32, was arraigned Tuesday morning on charges of open murder, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm in connection to the death of Damarius Cochran.

The shooting happened Saturday evening in the parking lot of the Pleasant Motel on 28th Street SE near Jefferson Avenue. The Grand Rapids Police Department says officers were initially called there on a report of an overdose, but then saw Cochran, 26, actually had a gunshot wound to the back. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

According to a course document outlining some of the evidence against Hayle, the shooting was caught on the motel’s surveillance cameras. Police said that video showed Hayle and Cochran “interacting” in the parking lot.

“The footage clearly shows Devin Hayle produce a silver and black handgun, point the pistol at Damarius Cochran, and then shoot him,” the document reads…
