John Ball Zoo eyes site in Walker for aquarium

WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) — John Ball Zoo is considering putting its new aquarium in Walker, the CEO says.

In a statement sent to News 8, CEO Peter D’Arienzo said the zoo is “performing due diligence on a 190-acre site in Walker where this project could be located.”

The statement did not list the exact location, but Crain’s Grand Rapids Business identified the site as the old Fenske Landfill off Wilson Avenue along the Grand River, which Crain’s said is a federally designated contamination site.

The zoo began exploring the possibility of building an aquarium in February 2021. At the time, it said it could happen in 5 to 10 years. In October of that same year, it said it would conduct a study to see if it would make more sense to have it in Kent County or Muskegon County…
