Dangerous waves, swim risk rises on Lake Michigan this weekend

Dangerous waves and currents are forecast to develop later Saturday and into Sunday along a stretch of Lake Michigan that is packed with popular beaches. And this high swim risk is happening on a holiday weekend when temperatures on Saturday will soar to nearly 90 degrees.

So if you’re headed to the beach to beat the heat, use extra caution in the water. Southwest winds gusting to 25 mph will build waves and make the lake’s currents more dangerous for swimmers.

“Unfortunately, the warm and humid beach weather this weekend will clash with swimming conditions that will become dangerous due to large waves and strong currents,” National Weather Service meteorologists in Grand Rapids said. “Waves will build Saturday afternoon and continue Sunday, especially at beaches north of Holland.”…
