West Michigan celebrates Independence Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Friday is Independence Day, and West Michigan is celebrating in style.

Communities across West Michigan are holding parades, fireworks, parties and more to mark the Fourth of July. According to Storm Team 8, midday showers are possible, but most of it should clear by the afternoon. The weather should cooperate for fireworks: Clear conditions are expected in the evening.

SAVING SPOTS FOR THE GRANDVILLE PARADE

Grandville’s Fourth of July parade stepped off at 10 a.m., but for some, the day started much earlier. Community members were allowed to start reserving spots at 6 a.m. A News 8 crew saw several people setting out chairs and blankets.

The festivities in Grandville also include food trucks, a craft show and live music. Fireworks begin at dark.

A DECADES-OLD TRADITION IN GRAND RAPIDS

The Hollyhock Lane Parade in Grand Rapids’ Ottawa Hills neighborhood has been a tradition for more than 80 years. Organizers say it’s the longest-running continuous Independence Day parade in the state.

It started as a bike parade in 1934. Today, it still features bikes, but there are also kids’ floats, antique cars, local groups and fire and police vehicles…
