Two days of thunderstorms expected in Michigan tonight and tomorrow

Two days of thunderstorms are possible in Michigan over the next 36 hours or so as multiple rounds of weather are expected across the region.

The first round of rain is passing over the southern portion of the state this morning, with that expected to clear out by the afternoon. This will allow for some stronger storms in the evening hours, though it is noted that with the lingering system passing over the state, the severe weather chances have gone down for much of the region.

Currently, the NOAA Storm Prediction Center has reduced the risk of severe storms from much of the southern region for Friday. Only the southwestern portion of the state remains under threat, with Grand Rapids the only major city included. The rest of the region under a marginal risk for severe weather for the evening.

The main risk is the severe wind, with the region under a 15-29% risk for severe wind. There is also a 2% tornado risk for the region.

The Michigan Storm Chasers give the area around and east of Grand Rapids a medium risk (3 out of 6) of severe weather while giving the Thumb region a low risk (2 out of 6).

They note east side of the state may see severe weather from 4 pm through sunset, while the west side gets theirs as early as 6 p.m., but as late as 10-11 p.m. and into the early morning hours Saturday.

Saturday

Heading into Saturday, another round of severe weather is again possible over Michigan, with a slight risk in place over the Tri-Cities and Thumb Region by the Storm Prediction Center.

“Despite effective-layer shear being generally less than 35 knots, some severe potential will exist with this convection — primarily strong downdraft winds — owing to the degree of instability and precipitable water values around 1.75 inches,” the Storm Prediction Center said. “Additionally, with a modest low-level jet and a preexisting boundary in the vicinity, a tornado or two cannot be ruled out.”…
