This summer, there’s been no shortage of trouble tied to car takeovers in the Grand Rapids area—including shootings. Now local police are making it clear: these illegal events aren’t welcome here.
What is a Car Takeover?
Don’t confuse them with your neighborhood car show. Car takeovers, sometimes called meetups, are often large, unauthorized gatherings that take over parking lots—and even highways. Last month Wood TV 8 reported that early one morning traffic was stopped on I-196 westbound near US-131 while cars did donuts and revved their engines in the middle of the highway. That same day, a man was shot in the head at another meetup at the Shops at CenterPoint.
Police aren’t sugarcoating the risks. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office shares on Facebook:
They’re dangerous, illegal, and increasingly tied to violence—including shootings. They take place on private property without permission, disrupt neighborhoods, block businesses, and put lives at risk.
