Riverside Park to host free kayaking in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Families and visitors to Grand Rapids’ Riverside Park lagoon north of downtown can enjoy a free day of kayaking on July 18.

For over five years, the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation department has offered kayaks for rent at the city’s mile-and-a-half long park off Monroe Avenue. However, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on July 18, kayakers can now waive the fee.

“If you have younger kids, we have tandem kayaks,” John Judnich, recreation supervisor for Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation, said. “It really gives everybody a chance to get out there and experience Grand Rapids from a different view.”

Free “family paddle nights” have coincided with specific Food Truck Fridays events — also at Riverside Park — throughout the summer. That way, foodies can grab a bite to eat before or after their trip along the Grand River.
