GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources confirms that someone has shattered the state record for the heaviest flathead catfish.
Codie Carlson, from Newport, reportedly caught the giant fish while bowfishing on June 29 on Plum Creek in Monroe County.

The fish weighed 64.46 pounds and was 45 inches long. The previous record holder, caught by an Indiana man in 2022 on the St. Joseph River, was 53.35 pounds and 43 inches long.
DNR fisheries biologist John Buszkiewicz verified the record. The DNR said Buszkiewicz’s crew likely caught the same fish while they were doing survey work on the Plum Creek in 2020. At that time, the fish weighed 55 pounds and measured in at 43 inches long before they threw it back.
Carlson referred to himself as a “true fishoholic.” He told the DNR that he wasn’t thinking about the record when he caught the fish…
