Federal order to keep West Michigan coal plant open cost $29M in the first month

A U.S. Department of Energy order in May to keep a large coal-fired power plant along Lake Michigan operating past its planned closure date cost $29 million in the first five weeks.

Consumers Energy parent company CMS Energy Corp. (NYSE: CMS), owner of the J.H. Campbell coal plant in West Olive between Holland and Grand Haven, disclosed the cost Thursday in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The cost stems from the May 23 DOE order to keep Campbell online past its May 31 scheduled closure date. The emergency order cited concerns over potential electricity shortages during high-demand summer months.
