Grand Rapids bakery closing storefront as it expands wholesale operations

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A bakery in Grand Rapids is closing its storefront as it prepares to move to a larger location to expand its wholesale business.

Schnitz Bakery at 1301 Fulton St. near Benjamin Avenue is closing its retail storefront, it said in a letter handed out to customers. The bakery already stopped selling donuts and sweets Saturday as it winds down operations at that location.

The move comes as the bakery, which makes bread, buns and other items for at least a dozen restaurants and businesses in the area, prepares to move to a larger location.

“After 25 years of rising early, rolling dough, and serving up fresh bread with a smile from our cozy little shop, we’ve officially outgrown our current retail location,” owner Derek Benedict wrote in the letter. “Thanks to your incredible support, we have invested in more space to keep up with demand and continue doing what we love — baking for our community.”…
