RAND RAPID, Mich. (WOOD) — The grand marshals have been chosen for the Greatest Generation Celebration parade and flyover that will take place on Labor Day in downtown Grand Rapids.
Greatest Generation to be honored in Grand Rapids
The grand marshals are 101-year-old Maxine Boeve and 99-year-old Eugene Khorey.
Working as a Rosie the Riveter, Boeve found herself at a U.S. Navy shipyard in Washington State during World War II.
“It was all women that would run the machines and the men were the setup guys,” Boeve said. “I did well. I went from the beginner machines that kept breaking down to… good ones. Made parts for battleships, aircraft carriers, submarines and destroyers, and mostly plumbing parts.”
Khorey served in the U.S. Army infantry.
“I never thought I qualified. I always read of grand marshals for the Rose Bowl parade,” Khorey said. “I’m gonna be a grand marshal and I’m just an infantryman. Yeah, that was very impressive.”…
