It has been a hot and muggy summer in Grand Rapids and Michigan. We have had more 90 degree days with high dew points than I remember to make for a really uncomfortable last few months.
But, guess what? We sort of mild. We never reached 100 degrees!
Surprised? Yes, I’m sure everyone is. The “feels like” temperature may have been reported to be 100 plus degrees, but actual air temp highest was mid to upper 90s.
The rest of the country, except Alaska and Hawaii, wasn’t as lucky. California recorded the highest this summer at 124 degrees. Think of Death Valley. Arizona was next at 120 degrees, followed by Nevada at 118, with the rest of the country averaging from 100 to 107.
If you follow the map, it’s the Great Lakes states, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio that didn’t reach 100. There was one other outlier, Vermont. They, too, stayed below 100.
