GRPD Investigates Home Burglary and Assault That Left Man Hospitalized, Case Sparks Social Media Debate

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – A burglary and assault on Grand Rapids’ west side has left a man critically injured and sparked widespread discussion on social media, prompting the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) to clarify details of the case.

Victim Identified as Todd Johnson

Police say officers responded to a reported burglary on 8th Street around 8:30 a.m. on August 16. At the time, they were unable to speak with the resident, later identified as Todd Johnson, because he had already been transported to the hospital in critical condition.

A family representative confirmed Johnson suffered a severe brain injury after being assaulted and robbed. He is now in rehab, and relatives have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical expenses.

Juveniles Taken Into Custody

GRPD has not shared specific details of the assault but confirmed that four juveniles were taken into custody following the investigation.
