ArtPrize celebrates opening with party, parade, fireworks

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Though visitors could start viewing entries Thursday, ArtPrize is hosting its opening celebration, with a parade and fireworks in downtown Grand Rapids, Friday evening.

The fun kicks off at Rosa Parks Circle as early as 4:30 p.m. with a kid-friendly lantern make-and-take workshop and a 21-and-over beer garden. Opening celebration live performances begin at 6:30 p.m.

What ArtPrize visitors should know about road work, parking

At 7:45 p.m., a parade will begin on Monroe Center at Rosa Parks Circle and weaves its way around the downtown area before crossing the Blue Bridge, heading north on Front Avenue and ending on Pearl Street.

After the parade, there will be a fireworks show over the Grand River.

This year, visitors can view 931 entries spread across 155 venues or check out a number of events and activations around the ArtPrize area.

The competition’s awards ceremony — which will announce the winners of hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes — is scheduled for Oct. 3. ArtPrize wraps up the following day…
