Commuters Face Weeks of I-196 Closures in Grand Rapids

If you drive anywhere near downtown Grand Rapids, brace yourself: the next few weeks are going to be a headache.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) just announced a $1.3 million project to repair five bridges at the I-196/US-131 interchange, and for us that means closures, detours, and plenty of brake lights.

Starting today (Monday September 22nd) crews will be working on concrete repairs, slope improvements, and even repainting parts of the interchange.

The good news? It’ll make the bridges last longer and keep them safer. The bad news? If you rely on I-196 or US-131, your commute could slow down a bit until late October.

Here’s what you need to know without pulling out a map or using your GPS:

• If you’re driving westbound on I-196 and usually hop onto southbound US-131: that ramp will be closed. • Both directions of I-196 will see lane closures where it meets US-131. • Which means at some point, eastbound I-196 will be completely shut down at US-131 over two weekends. (MDOT hasn’t announced those exact dates yet, but you’ll definitely want to watch out for them.)…
