‘Amazing’: Woman learning to walk again at Mary Free Bed after spinal cord injury

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month and doctors and patients in Grand Rapids are bringing attention to people impacted in West Michigan.

Kat Munsell is being treated at Mary Free Bed and started making progress with walking again earlier this week. At 25, Munsell never thought she would become a patient with a spinal cord injury. She was conscious and remembers hearing her back break.

“I immediately lost all sensation in my legs,” Munsell said. “It was just this like immediate loss of feeling and I was just like ‘Oh my God this is terrifying.’”
