Grand Rapids Public School, teachers’ union continue disputes over contract amid financial woes

Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) has yet to reach a settled contract with its teachers, more than a month into the school year and well over a year since talks began.

Negotiations between district officials and the Grand Rapids Education Association (GREA) started in May 2024. A recent school board meeting reflected just how far apart both groups remain in their deliberations.

At the same time, GRPS is also facing the threat of a budget shortfall due to the Michigan legislature’s failure to pass a 2025-26 budget, among other financial stressors…
