Hundreds register for tree planting event in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — On Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, visitors to River City Scholars Charter Academy will meet with nonprofit Friends of Grand Rapids Parks to plant 200 new trees across Grand Rapids for its annual Neighborwoods event.

“We’ll plant about 200 trees over the weekend,” Stacy Bare, executive director of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, said. “We have about 230 people signed up, which is a great turnout.”

On Sept. 26, volunteers will meet work together between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. across the Boston Square and Oakdale neighborhoods in Grand Rapids before enjoying some celebratory shaved ice.

Many of these volunteers on Friday, Bare says, will be coming as corporate teams or education groups as a sort of team-building exercise that gets organizations out into the community.
