Sprawling, colorful hanging glass tapestry wins $100,000 ArtPrize 2025 grand prize

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — ARRAS, a colorful hanging glass tapestry “comprised of thousands of delicate glass fibers, woven together by hand,” has won ArtPrize’s 2025 $100,000 grand prize, officials announced Friday night.

The piece, which was displayed at Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, was created by Mark Lewanski of Portland, Michigan, who describes it as “the largest kiln-fired, woven glass surface in existence.”

“It is made from several thousand glass strips, canes and stringers, hand woven into a fragile lattice before being fired over a ceramic mold in a 11×7 ft fusing kiln located at my studio in Old Town, Lansing, Michigan,” he wrote in his artist statement…
