Facing sickle cell together: How a West Michigan family tackles daily life with sickle cell disease

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Price family navigates daily life with love and laughter, while three of their children—Canaan, Brielle and Julia—face the challenges of sickle cell.

“I don’t think there’s been a week this year that we haven’t been on the phone with the school because the kids are at school with symptoms and have a kid like come home from school or falling asleep in class, yeah, because their energy level is often not the same as other kids,” said mom Maggie Price.

“I just remember this one time, like, when Canaan was sick, and like, he was like, just on the floor, just laying there, and we had to, like, help him up, and, like, get him in the shower, and then we had to, like, take him to the car to get him to the hospital,” recalls Tristan Price, the children’s’ older brother…
