Court docs: Mom threatened daughters’ lives months before deadly fire

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids mom accused of setting fire to her home while her three daughters were inside, leading to the death of one of them, had a lengthy history with Children’s Protective Services and allegedly made a threat to her kids’ lives only months before, documents obtained by News 8 show.

Roconda Singleton was charged with murder, child abuse and arson after a Jan. 25 fire that led to the death of 12-year-old Shamiya Stewart.

Shamiya’s two sisters, Sharnice and Cherish, escaped the fire and now live with their aunt.

Singleton remains incompetent to stand trial. She is undergoing mental health treatment at a state hospital in southeastern Michigan with the goal of restoring competency.
