Downtown Grand Rapids investing $111,000 in urban forest expansion

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The tree canopy in downtown Grand Rapids is set to expand, with 100 trees expected to be planted starting this fall.

The Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority approved spending $111,000 to work with the nonprofit group Friends of Grand Rapids Parks to plant and maintain the trees along sidewalks and streets throughout downtown.

The plantings, set to be finished next spring, will replace dead or dying trees and add trees to areas lacking them. Friends of Grand Rapids Park will be tasked with maintaining the trees for two years…
