Michigan exploring new train routes linking Detroit, Grand Rapids & Traverse City

The Michigan Department of Transportation is studying a new east-west “coast-to-coast” passenger rail line that would connect Holland, Grand Rapids, East Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Detroit.

There is currently no train connection from Detroit to Lansing, Grand Rapids, or Holland.

MDOT officials say planning work will begin in spring 2026 to study the route, which may run through Howell or Jackson before reaching Ann Arbor.
