The mystery of the Edmund Fitzgerald: The freighter’s fateful night

News 8 is producing a series of stories that will be published in the days leading up to Nov. 10, the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It will culminate with a WOOD TV+ special called: “The Fitz: 50 Years Later.” That will air at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Nov. 10 will mark 50 years since the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost on Lake Superior. It’s one of the region’s most popular shipwreck tales, in large part thanks to Gordon Lightfoot’s haunting lyrics, but also because of the ship’s mysterious story.

Just like the song says, the Edmund Fitzgerald was “the pride of the American side.” It was one of the most popular freighters on the Great Lakes; a common sight coming in and out of the Soo Locks. To this day, the freighter remains the largest known ship lost on the Great Lakes and stands as a symbol of the lake’s true power…
