Girlfriend feared chase, break-in suspect would ‘suicide by cop’

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman who called 911 to have her boyfriend arrested for violating parole said he never intended to hurt Kent County deputies when he armed himself with a knife.

Cody Skaggs, 46, on parole after serving 25 years for a 1996 murder, was in court Monday, facing new charges after deputies say he led them on a chase and then broke into a retirement home north of Grand Rapids last week.

Skaggs’s girlfriend, Alison Kukawski, called 911 last Tuesday — two days before the chase — asking police to pick him up at their Plainfield Township apartment. He was wanted for absconding on parole two years after he was released from prison for second-degree murder. She said they lived together despite a condition of his parole that prohibited him from being anywhere near her.
