Deputies confirm fourth death in wrong-way crash on US-131, ID drivers

MARTIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Deputies have confirmed that a fourth person — a 17-year-old girl — has died days after a wrong-way crash on US-131. They have also released the names of the drivers, both of whom died on the scene of the crash.

Lt. Brandon Berens with the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the 17-year-old’s death Tuesday morning. A spokesperson for Portage Public Schools confirmed that she was a Community High School student. The girl was a passenger in the car that was traveling in the correct direction, Berens said. Her name was not immediately released.

Also on Tuesday, the sheriff’s office named the wrong-way driver as 38-year-old Erin Louise Jones of Grand Rapids. The driver of the car that was hit was identified as 18-year-old Emmanuel Browning of Kalamazoo.

The crash happened on northbound US-131 in Allegan County around 1 a.m. Sunday. Deputies said a driver in a Subaru Legacy — later identified as Jones — left the highway at 129th Avenue, made a U-turn and then drove toward oncoming traffic for multiple miles.
