GRPD: Man charged with open murder in shooting

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say a man has been charged in the deadly shooting of a 26-year-old earlier this month on Grand Rapids’ southeast side.

Gary Lee Griggs, 44, was arraigned Monday on charges of open murder and felony firearm, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department.

The shooting happened Nov. 6 on Hollister Avenue SE near Wealthy Street SE. That night, a passerby found 26-year-old Donovan Moody lying in the street with a fatal gunshot wound, according to GRPD. Moody died on scene.

Griggs was booked into the Kent County Jail Friday, the jail’s website indicates.

Grigg’s previously spent 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in a June 2005 killing in Kent County, online state prison records show. He was sentenced in June 2008 and discharged from the state prison system in August 2023.

The jail’s website also indicates there is a hold on Griggs from the U.S. Marshals Service for a probation violation…
