After resident opposition spurs change, Grand Rapids approves new park name

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A new park on Grand Rapids’ southwest side officially has its title, after a previously proposed name was rejected due to resident opposition.

Unity Park will be the official name for the $2.3 million city park that is currently under construction at 680 Cesar E. Chavez Ave. SW, in Grand Rapids’ Roosevelt Park neighborhood. The Grand Rapids City Commission unanimously approved the name Tuesday, Nov. 18.

The name was chosen through a resident poll that had 415 respondents. Unity Park was the top vote-getter, receiving 232 votes, followed by the runner-up, Navarro Plaza, which received 183 votes…
