Veterinarian to serve jail time for stealing homeless man’s dog

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A veterinarian who stole a homeless man’s dog will serve time in jail.

A Grand Rapids judge sentenced Amanda Hergenreder Monday morning for misdemeanor larceny in the theft of Vinny the pitbull last year.

Hergenreder, who has a vet practice north of Flint, was in Grand Rapids last fall when she said she spotted a pit bull near 28th Street and Eastern Avenue that appeared to be sick and alone, tied up with no food, water or shelter.

Hergenreder took the dog home with her and never returned it — even after Grand Rapids Police told her it belonged to Chris Hamilton, a homeless man, and ordered the dog’s return.

Hergenreder’s attorney had asked for no jail time — the vet had no prior record — but District Court Judge Angela Ross gave her ten days in jail and ordered her to pay $1,000 in restitution…
