Over 250 tickets issued as odd-even parking returns to Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Odd-even parking restrictions are in effect in Grand Rapids as the city works to clear the final remnants of precipitation from Saturday’s snowfall.

The Grand Rapids Department of Public Works told News 8 Monday that it had 75% of the city’s streets cleared and hoped to finish off the last few roads by the end of the day. The major hang-up preventing those streets from being cleared is odd-even parking violations.

Localized lake-effect snow expected Monday

Mobile GR, which handles parking enforcement, added that it has issued 258 odd-even tickets since Nov. 1 of this year and 32 since the snow fell Saturday. Organizers added that their full enforcement team is back on the roads Monday, following the holiday weekend.

The attention aims to get cars properly parked so that plows can clear snow and ice all the way to the curb.

“It’s all about safety,” John Gorney, Director of Public Works for Grand Rapids said. “We want public safety to be able to get down those roads. Police, fire, ambulance, and be able to access your homes. On top of that, we also — if and when we thaw — want the water to make its way to the catch basin on the side of the road.”
