Youth summit in Grand Rapids aims to help at-risk teens solve conflicts

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A new teen summit in Grand Rapids is aiming to support and empower at-risk teens in Southeast Grand Rapids.

The summit, driven by the Urban League of West Michigan Cure Violence Department, was held Wednesday at Covenant High School. Organizers say this is the first of its kind. They say the goal was to give students and young people resources and strategies to combat conflicts without violence.

Markeith Large, the principal at Covenant High School, told News 8 a lot of the students at the school come from backgrounds that may provide challenges they are working to combat.

“Our kids come from traumatic backgrounds; our kids suffer from trauma from gang violence. We have had a number of homicides in our community, and it directly affects us,” he said. “But we are here to help them out and lend a helping hand. One thing we do, we want to educate with love.”…
