GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The knife-wielding suspect shot and seriously injured by Grand Rapids police in September on the city’s West Side likely would have died except for one thing: An officer’s gun misfired, the police chief said.
Grand Rapids Police Department Chief Eric Winstrom confirmed that an officer’s gun malfunctioned as the suspect was charging at him with a knife.

He said it’s the department’s first such gun malfunction in the line of duty since he became chief. Police were still trying to determine why it failed.
