Michigan AG identifies 51 priests accused of abuse within Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan Attorney General’s Office released a report Monday detailing allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct within the Diocese of Grand Rapids dating back to 1950. It includes a list of 51 priests who are alleged to have engaged in sexual abuse or misconduct, including 38 who were ordained or incardinated by the Diocese of Grand Rapids.

The report, 336 pages in all, is the culmination of more than seven years of work which began under former Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette. Michigan’s seven dioceses, including the Archdiocese of Detroit, turned over more than 3.5 million digital documents and 220 boxes of paper documents to the AG’s office in October 2018. Reports on the Dioceses of Marquette, Gaylord, Kalamazooand Lansing have already been released.

Of the 51 priests named in the report, 37 have died. None of the other 14 are actively practicing in the Diocese of Grand Rapids.

No new charges have been filed in connection with the Grand Rapids report. Nessel told News 8 that each case connected with the Diocese of Grand Rapids had passed the statute of limitations, the priest had already passed away or the victim did not wish to pursue criminal charges…
