‘Upcycling’ finds popularity amid 2025 #Thriftmas trend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – National survey and consumer behavior data indicate that some shoppers, especially members of Generation Z, are relying on blasts from the past for more of their holiday gifts this year, as a years-long trend continues to grow: upcycling.

One survey from accounting and consulting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers found that 63% of Gen Zers said they would opt for resale and upcycled products this holiday season, both for financial and environmental reasons.

Rewind, a shop in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, is among a number of locations in that neighborhood and around West Michigan that are seeing the data proven locally.

“We specialize in vintage and upcycled streetwear,” co-owner Caleb Straight told Nexstar’s WOOD. “It’s very trendy. We keep seeing the hashtag #Thriftmas. I think people are getting used to the idea that clothing can be reused and reworn and stuff like that. It doesn’t have to be worn once and gotten rid of and fill up a landfill somewhere.”…
