Ice storm set to create dangerous travel conditions in Michigan post-Christmas

Post-Christmas travel could be dangerous in Michigan on Friday as an ice storm is expected to hit the region.

Freezing rain begins across Southwest Michigan early Friday morning and will continue into the afternoon. The Grand Rapids NWS expects some areas to change over to rain before precipitation ends Friday afternoon, especially South/West of Grand Rapids to Marshall.

“No doubt, roads will become slick Thursday night and Friday until they can get treated,” the Grand Rapids NWS said. “We aren’t expecting winds greater than 20 mph or so. This would be a much bigger deal if surface temperatures were expected in the mid 20s, higher QPF, and stronger winds. As of now, that`s not the case. That said, can’t rule out isolated to scattered power outages.”

The worst of the ice is expected to take place on the southeastern portion of the state, with the Flint projected to receive 0.18 inches of ice, while Ann Arbor could receive up to 0.20 inches of ice.

This is not to say that Mid-Michigan won’t see significant icing…
