Remnants of holiday gifting piling up? Here’s what to do

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Now that all of the presents have been unwrapped and gifts are out of their packaging – what did you do with the trash? Well, the Kent County Department of Public Works is hoping you kept recycling in mind when bagging up your holiday waste.

“We find it to be very important to give that guide out this time of year for a few reasons. One is that, there is a lot more waste that is being made during this time of year as people have gatherings and are buying gifts and opening gifts and so giving people more specific guidelines of what to do with all those materials that they’re coming into contact with or having, so that they’re not throwing it all into the trash and could have some recycling options or even composting options or other use options besides just throwing it in the trash,” Micah Herrboldt, Waste Reduction Educator for the Kent Co. Dept. of Public Works told 13 On Your Side.

“We really pride ourselves on having a very robust. This single stream system that can handle everything that comes into the facility that is from that curbside cart. So those single stream materials, paper, plastic, glass, metal, we’re able to handle all of them. And then, even when it gets to be kind of an extension of what normally would come in at this time of year, we’re getting more than you would normally see, we’re still able to keep up with that. So we’re able to handle that single stream system very well.”…
