GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Many people are traveling this holiday weekend and airports are busy. That’s why a group of demonstrators gathered outside the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids Saturday afternoon to protest Avelo Airlines.
They’re against the airline conducting deportation flights in partnership with the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement. An Avelo spokesperson told News 8 the company does not have a contract with ICE but has carried flights under both Trump and Biden administrations. They explained those flights are without customers.
Demonstrators at the Ford Airport say they’re there every other week and will continue to seek justice for migrants. They also hope their actions will encourage people to reconsider flying with the airlines.
“It’s like the only bright spot in this whole situation. This whole year has been a nightmare. It gives me a lot of hope that there’s other people that care,” demonstration organizer Nan Nickson said…
