Restaurant workers skeptical of wage, tip change benefits

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan’s minimum wage went up with the new year.

Workers who receive tips now earn $5.49 per hour. Another big change for the industry is a temporary tax cut on tips. Workers can expect to save up to $1,500 a year on state and federal taxes.

The Breakfast House on 28th Street in Wyoming started paying the new minimum wage when it opened two weeks ago. Still, manager Jessica VanBlaricum-Miller doesn’t believe that will help recruit workers.

“It creates a lot of confusion and it feels a lot like placating, just to kind of silence people and make some promises that aren’t necessarily there,” VanBlaricum-Miller, said.
