Edenville Dam flood trial opens with focus on state engineer

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Luke Trumble heard his name a lot in court.

As a civil trial began in a lawsuit brought against the state of Michigan by Edenville Dam flood victims, it was immediately evident that Trumble, a dam safety engineer at the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), would be a key figure.

Trumble eventually took the witness stand late afternoon Monday — but the state engineer’s name was uttered so often by then that the trial judge mistakenly referenced a plaintiff attorney as “Mr. Trumble” by accident during morning opening statements…
